Cleaning is a labour-intensive sector with a persistent cash flow gap at its core. Staff — the primary cost — must be paid every week or fortnight. Commercial clients, however, operate on standard invoice terms of 30 to 60 days. This means a cleaning contractor can be owed weeks of unpaid invoices while simultaneously meeting a weekly wage bill. On larger contracts, the gap between cost outlay and income receipt can run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Winning a new commercial contract — with an office complex, a retail chain, or a facilities management company — is a growth milestone. But it creates an immediate cash flow demand. New cleaning staff must be recruited, uniformed, and inducted before the first shift. Equipment, chemicals, and consumables must be procured and in place on day one. All of this expenditure precedes the first invoice by weeks.

Equipment costs represent a further pressure point. Industrial floor cleaners, pressure washers, specialist window cleaning machinery, and vehicle fleets all require capital investment. This equipment is essential to winning and retaining commercial contracts — but replacing or upgrading it requires cash that may not be available when the need arises.
